The University of New South Wales completed a study on selfie pictures and determined that sexy selfie pictures relate to income inequality in the United States.  The study is available on the website of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.  As income inequality increases the type of self images change.  They conducted the study involving the Gini coefficient and other factors.  They discuss expenditures in beauty salons and clothing stores as another way of forecasting income inequality.

Cafe Hayak proposes that markets do not supply paid leave suboptimally.  They express their idea as follows.

…most employers — in order to attract workers who value paid leave relative to high wages — won’t reduce paid leave enough to make it profitable for them to offer higher wages.

Most in the labor market do not go to employers who provide the benefits they seek.  Many do not even know what benefits employers offer until they are signing up for them.  Employers may add a benefit for marketing purposes or to please existing employees so that those employees are retained, but the assumption that such policies are designed to attract workers ignores reality.  The reality is that paid leave benefits are often completely unknown by potential employees.

Science Based Medicine has a great look at Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present, by Harriett Washington. The book and the review express an important fact very clearly.

Race is scientifically meaningless, but discrimination persists…

…The racial health divide is undeniable. African Americans don’t live as long. Their infant mortality is twice that of whites. Twice as many develop diabetes. They have the highest rate of cancer and cancer deaths. The reasons for these discrepancies are complex and are largely due to socioeconomic and historical factors rather than racial characteristics.

The statement about the reasons for the discrepancies relating to socioeconomic and historical factors rather than racial characteristics is a very important observation. Changing suicides rates in The United States are another item that fits into the list of things that seem to affect a demographic at significantly different rate but are due to socioeconomic and historical factors rather than racial characteristics.

Real Climate Science has a great look at 1974 including news clippings and information related to satellite weather observations and the coming mini ice-age.  It ends with a video of a USA Legislator explaining that world is going to end in 12 years while looking into a selfie-camera mounted on a floor.

The Spectator has an interesting historical review on how Steven Seagal became a special envoy to Russia, at Russia’s request.

Hundreds of datasets from libraries, archives, and museums

Douglas McCarthy and Andrea Wallace produced a survey of data access policies and data sources.  It’s in Google Docs and called the Survey of GLAM open access policy and practice [2.0]. It’s an excellent resource with the license terms and web locations of hundreds of datasets from libraries, archives, and museums.

Quick and easy tool to enable and disable the Windows 10 firewall. This is ideal for playing LAN games such as Minecraft which use changing port numbers.  It’s also useful for other LAN games so that in-depth troubleshooting is not required prior to having fun. Simply open the program and enable or disable the firewall.  Remember to Enable the firewall once more when done playing the game.  This is a great tool for children playing LAN games with changing ports.
